To the editor: The position paper by the French-American-British (FAB) Cooperative Group (1) concerning the classification of acute megakaryoblastic leukemia is timely but fails to mention the use of plastic-embedded bone marrow biopsies in the diagnostic evaluation of suspected hematopoietic malignancy. Several issues raised by Bloomfield and Brunning in their companion editorial (2), including sample availability, diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, utility, and cost effectiveness, may be resolved through the use of plastic-embedded biopsy sections (3).
We have been using this approach to evaluate patients suspected of having leukemia and have made the diagnosis of acute megakaryoblastic leukemia in five patients. These
