To the editor: It has been reported that nifedipine has diabetogenic properties and that the plasma glucose concentration must be monitored in patients receiving this drug (1, 2).
We checked the fasting plasma glucose, glucagon, and insulin levels before and after 1 month of nifedipine treatment (10 mg three times daily) in 12 patients with angina pectoris. No patient had evidence of endocrinopathy; therapy with other drugs was continued and their dosage was not changed during the study period. In the test after 1 month of treatment, the blood was sampled 2 hours after the morning dose of nifedipine. The
