In the spring of 2010, my family prepared to move so that my husband could begin a residency program in New York City, about 250 miles from our home in Virginia. My husband was excited. He'd matched at an excellent hospital in Manhattan and was eager to begin his program.
I was apprehensive. I loved where we lived in Virginia and was dreading leaving it behind. Nonetheless, on an April day, I found myself with a real estate agent, looking at places to rent just outside the city, in New Jersey. He'd found one for us, a little house, right near the Hudson River. He brought me down to the water's edge so that I could see the view.
