In spite of the most rigid precautions against cross infections scarlet fever sometimes develops in patients admitted to diphtheria wards. Councilman, Mallory and Pearce in a study of 220 deaths from diphtheria found scarlet fever 34 times. It has long been known that streptococci could be cultured from the complicating lesions of diphtheria more often than any other micro-organism. Until methods of recognizing the scarlatinal streptococci have been worked out, it was impossible to know how many of the complications were due to scarlatinal infection.
