Although medical authorities still differ with regard to a number of details concerning the etiology of beriberi, there is a very general consensus of opinion to the effect that beriberi is a deficiency disease, produced whenever, in the absence of an adequate mixed diet, highly milled rice is used as the main food staple, and that the disease can be prevented by the substitution of a sufficiently undermilled rice.
