No comprehensive study of diabetes mellitus in the American negro has appeared in medical literature. This condition, as observed in the colored race, presents many interesting points of comparison and contrast with the same disease in the white race. The data from one hundred cases of diabetes mellitus occurring in the colored race have been subjected to statistical analysis. The disease occurs in pure blacks as well as mulattoes. The sex incidence in this series is predominantly female. In the large majority of cases the appearance of the disease has been preceded by marked obesity in the female patients. Syphilis
