The first edition of this book was called Bacteriology in Medicine and Surgery, and was written to make available for others the practical knowledge acquired in the bacteriological laboratories of the city of New York, and was intended more for medical practitioners than for medical students or laboratory workers. In the third edition the study of the pathogenic protozoa was included, and the title broadened to include the whole field of pathogenic microörganisms. At the same time the subjects were treated in a more comprehensive manner, so as to make it a suitable textbook for medical students. In the fifth
