It has been known that the systemic blood pressure is not fixed, but is subject to variations from moment to moment and from hour to hour. Many workers have called attention to this variability of the blood pressure, particularly in certain forms of essential hypertension. It, however, has not been demonstrated whether there is any constant rhythm or variation in vasomotor activity in the curve of twenty-four hours. Studies have been carried out, notably by Campbell and Blankenhorn, in which, during sleep, there has been demonstrated a gradual fall in vasomotor activity succeeded by a rise in the early morning
