Every year, as a result of custom and, by now, well established precedent, your retiring president appears before you and, in the annual address, presents to you the report of the activities of our organization, the American College of Physicians, during the interval that has elapsed between the yearly meetings; he is wont to comment on the events that take place during the yearly meeting; he very generally has suggestions to make for the betterment of the organization, and he comments upon the policies that guide it. This year the duty of addressing you falls on my shoulders. Perchance one
