It is almost necessary to make an excuse for writing about peptic ulcer. Medical literature of the past twenty years has been filled with articles on this subject, volumes have been written about it and a verbal war between the advocates of medical and surgical treatment is still being waged with great intensity. When so much verbiage is wasted on any subject it engenders the suspicion that the reason for this wastage is a lack of knowledge or understanding of the subject.
