This book was first brought out in 1912 and to the present edition, the fourth, but little new material has been added. The relationship of the simple fundamental principles, as previously stated, to the structure of modern psychopathology has been made more evident by a new introductory chapter 19 pages in length and by occasional explanatory footnotes. This book makes no pretense of being a complete treatise at any point. Rather it is an Einführung leading the beginner by a logical approach and with proper emphasis upon historical development to the point from which the many independent schools of thought
