The methods referred to in the preceding abstract were used in a study of the effect of digitalis on the volume output and size of the heart in heart failure. A small group of patients, among whom were included examples of arteriosclerotic, luetic and rheumatic heart disease, with and without disturbances of rhythm, gave results indicating that in the presence of heart failure (1) the cardiac output diminishes.
