It is with very sincere pleasure, indeed, that announcement is made elsewhere in this issue, in the form of an excerpt from the Minutes of the December meeting of the Regents of the American College of Physicians, of the award of The John Phillips Memorial Prize to Doctor Oswald T. Avery. This award is in recognition of the work of Dr. Avery on the capsular polysaccharides of the pneumococci, leading to the production of an enzyme having a specific and selective action upon the Type III polysaccharide, both in the chemically pure state and as it exists in the capsules
