Although it has been recognized for over a quarter of a century that a definite inter-relationship exists between the anterior hypophysis and the gonads, it is only within recent years that it has been possible to study the action of substances which definitely produce anatomical effects in the ovaries. This has been due mainly to the pioneer work of Evans and Long with alkaline extracts of the anterior lobe, and to the experiments of Smith and Engle and Aschheim and Zondek with gland implants in immature animals.
