In scanning the literature on meteorism we found a most interesting lecture, written by Francis Sibson1 in 1873. We wish to quote from this classic.
You will at once see how seriously distention of the colon must affect the organs of the chest, not only the lungs, but also the heart, by displacing that organ to the left, whereas, in the case of the stomach, its displacement tended rather to the right.
We find that the heart and the lungs are put to an immense disadvantage—that the lungs are compressed and the reserved air driven out of them—that the heart
