Aneurysms of various types have long been recognized. The first type to be described came to be known as false aneurysm, because following rupture or wounding of an artery, the sac which formed had for its walls the adjacent tissues or newly formed connective tissue. Arterio-venous aneurysm is the term applied to a communication between an artery and vein.
