Lancefield1 has described a method for the differentiation of the hemolytic streptococci into groups by means of the precipitin reaction, based on the presence in this organism of a group specific carbohydrate obtainable by acid hydrolysis. She has pointed out, and the observation has been confirmed by others, that streptococci etiologically involved in practically all cases of human infection are representatives of her group A. With Hare2 she studied a large number of cases of puerperal sepsis and demonstrated organisms of this group in 45 of 46 cases of severe infection, the other being caused by a member of group
