The occurrence of a specific disease may vary, not only in the incidence with which it afflicts a number of individuals, but also in the relative number of individuals differing by age, sex, or other factors. How much middle life or late maturity may alter the reaction of the individual to the same disease is a question not entirely clear. It is becoming a more important one in view of the aging of the population and the greater number of older people incurring acute infectious as well as chronic degenerative diseases.
