Dr. Hertzler, best known to the American public as the author of "The Horse and Buggy Doctor," states that this book is "in no wise a treatise on diseases of the thyroid gland, but a record of his studies extending over a period of nearly fifty years." This statement explains the almost complete absence of discussion of the work of other investigators, and the scarcity of references to the medical literature, of which only six are given in the entire book.
