Portal thrombosis occurs with sufficient frequency in those conditions producing the syndrome of portal hypertension to merit greater consideration than the occasional mention it is accorded. Our past knowledge concerning this interesting condition has been altered considerably by reason of advances in the studies of portal hypertension and its etiological factors. Although portal vein thrombosis is far from common in cirrhosis of the liver, this disease is its most frequent cause. Numerous other conditions which are to be discussed may produce this clinical syndrome. The first complete clinical description of this condition was made by Langdon-Brown1 in 1901. However, he
