This study represents an analysis of 71 patients with portal cirrhosis observed at the U. S. Marine Hospital, Detroit from 1926 to the present, with particular reference to clinical manifestations. An excellent comprehensive review of the natural history of Laennec's cirrhosis of the liver has been published recently by Ratnoff and Patek,1 who included a bibliography of the recent literature. In order to avoid duplication, we shall limit our comments primarily to statistical analysis of the case material, with but brief amplification upon theoretical considerations.
The 71 cases analysed consist of 21 cases wherein the diagnosis of portal cirrhosis
