Several investigators1 have demonstrated that patients with heart disease associated with auricular fibrillation develop congestive heart failure when digitalis is withheld. Katz, Sokolow, Weinberg and Plaut2 were the first investigators to study the effect of maintenance doses of folia digitalis on the circulation of patients with chronic congestive heart failure associated with regular sinus rhythm. They presented studies on four patients who showed a prompt increase in the venous pressure, circulation time, and weight when digitalis was withheld and who also developed clinical evidence of congestive heart failure. We had begun a similar study several months before the publication
