My old friend "Pete" Abbott, whose untimely death at the height of his powers at the age of 41 was one of the tragedies of American Medicine, used to say that there should be three kinds of scientific papers. In the first the author recounted new facts as he had observed them and drew appropriate conclusions. Papers of this type fill the American medical literature. In the second the author reviewed the literature and this type is also common. But Abbott was conscious of the lack of papers of a third type that he considered equally desirable, a type
