The great honor in the invitation of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians to serve as the James D. Bruce Memorial Lecturer in Preventive Medicine is traditionally interpreted as an opportunity to present to this convocation an appraisal of newer practices in a field of medicine which had its origin in the ancient world.
