Since Whipple51 and Brunschwig8a have shown that carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater and carcinoma of the head of the pancreas can be extirpated with prolongation of life, resulting pancreatoduodenectomy has become a recognized procedure for the removal of these tumors. The ultimate surgical results will be influenced by awareness of these lesions on the part of the physician.
