The First Annual Steroid Conference was held in Cuernavaca, Mexico, January 1951. The present volume consists of the papers presented there and the discussions following them. The papers are progress reports on evaluation of the physiological studies and therapeutic trials of various steroids, principally pregnenolone. The conflicting evidence presented leaves much doubt as to whether pregnenolone is of any value in rheumatoid arthritis, the condition most concerned in these studies. The discussions emphasize the difficulty in and necessity for rigorous scientific control of clinical studies attempting such evaluation.
