Iatrogenic means "caused by a physician." Iatrogenic heart disease is an illness in which symptoms referable to the heart, or symptoms interpreted by the patient as such, are produced as a result of the words or actions of a physician. It is of importance for the following reasons: (1) The disease produces considerable morbidity and may easily be more disabling than the average case of organic heart disease; (2) the disease should be and is preventable; and (3) the treatment of the disease is specific and differs from the management of any other type of cardiac disorder.
