In 1948 Rath and Finch1 described a simple method for the estimation of the iron stores in man by examining an unstained smear of bone marrow aspirate. In the present paper the method is applied to a large cross section of hematologic problems. The data obtained indicate that marrow examination for hemosiderin is a reliable index of iron stores in man and is frequently the decisive test in the diagnosis of anemia due to iron deficiency.
