Plasma cell myeloma is a well known disease often associated with obvious clinical and pathologic findings. However, in a study of 51 patients with this disease at the University Hospitals of Cleveland since 1933, it was apparent that certain aspects of the disease have not been sufficiently recognized. In particular, the type of anemia, the character of radiologic changes in the bones, sternal marrow findings and certain metabolic disturbances, if recognized as being part of the disease, may permit an earlier diagnosis than would otherwise be the case.
