For many years we have been aware that disturbance of liver function and secondary disease of the liver occur among patients with long-standing ulcerative colitis. As early as 1930 Giffin and I1 reported cases of a condition which we called "infectious hepatosplenomegaly," and which, in many ways, resembled Banti's disease, although it usually occurred in young people. In most of the cases which we reported at that time the ultimate cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver and hepatic failure.
Some years later, Comfort, Morlock and I2 reviewed four cases in which disease of the liver, with jaundice, had
