Over a period of several years, many patients with multiple myeloma and recurrent episodes of bacterial pneumonia have been observed at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospitals. However, the literature on multiple myeloma does not emphasize pulmonary infiltrates or recurrent pneumonia except as terminal events.1-6† For this reason it appeared desirable to gather evidence concerning bacterial pneumonia in myelomatosis and to investigate the immunologic response of patients with the disease.
