Mumps is an acute infectious disease of viral origin affecting primarily the parotid glands, but often involving the testicles, ovaries, central nervous system and pancreas. The complication of an orchitis seems confined almost entirely to adults, in whom it may constitute an exquisitely painful, disabling entity. Mumps orchitis usually appears as the parotitis is subsiding, somewhere between the fifth and seventh days. It may be unilateral or bilateral, and not infrequently is preceded by an epididymitis.
