This relatively rare complication of rheumatoid arthritis was first reported by van der Hoeve1 in a talk given before the Royal Dutch Ophthalmological Society in 1930 which was subsequently published in 1931. After this report there were several other case reports, and in 1938 Verhoeff and King2 analyzed 14 previously reported cases, and added another to the literature. In 1952 Anderson and Margolis3 reviewed the literature and reported that there were approximately 30 cases of scleral disease, either similar or related in varying degrees to this condition.
