In the medical literature of the Soviet Union it is customary to begin scientific articles with a reference to I. P. Pavlov's Collected Works, regardless of whether the subject bears any close relationship to them or not. At the outset of the following discussion, however, no reasons of etiquette are needed to give credit to the great Russian physiologist, whose doctor's thesis (1883)1 was based on his early fundamental studies concerning the cardiac sympathetic nerve, including its "trophic" significance, which was to be disregarded in the West for many decades.
