It is not generally appreciated that chickenpox, usually a benign disease in adults, may run a very severe course, or may be fatal. In recent years, papers have been published in radiologic journals describing the appearance of varicella pneumonitis in severe cases of chickenpox in adults.1, 2 Other papers and communications have indicated that adrenal steroid therapy may be deleterious in varicella pneumonitis.3, 4 The following case is presented to (1) document further the small number of cases of hemorrhagic pneumonitis due to varicella; (2) report the apparent improvement with cortisone therapy, and (3) emphasize the radiologic appearance of varicella
