Few experiences are more valuable to the physician than the experience of being a patient himself. Such an episode is worth a thousand lectures on the care of the patient. The Editor has recently undergone this salutary experience (repair of an inguinal hernia brought on by carrying all those manuscripts!). It has been a potent reminder of the world as seen by the bedridden patient, hospital life from the point of view of the underdog—under the sheet, that is. This is an educational opportunity that the physician should take advantage of if the Fates happen to send it his way.
