The four chapters of this little book were delivered as the Bampton Lectures of 1961 at Columbia University. In carrying the story of diphtheria from miasmas through microbes to molecules, the author achieves a notable synthesis of the unfolding story of medical science, a synthesis that goes far beyond the particular disease under discussion.
