The circulatory effects of lowering arterial oxygen saturation were studied in a total of 20 dogs on total cardiopulmonary bypass, in a manner permitting the independent assessment of these stimuli on the arterial bed, the venous bed, and the myocardium. The role of the chemoreceptors in the mediation of these responses was investigated by hemodynamically isolating or denervating these structures in 11 dogs.
Generalized systemic hypoxia resulted in striking venoconstriction. This effect could be prevented by chemoreceptor denervation, indicating that it was mediated by the chemoreceptor reflex arc. An increase in systemic vascular resistance occurred when hypoxemia was limited to
