A theory of the control of gastric secretion has been based on an interpretation of the response to insulin-hypoglycemia, relating the anterior hypothalamus and vagi to the first one to two hours of response, and the posterior hypothalamus and adrenal cortex to the second to fifth hours. We have studied the response to insulin-hypoglycemia in five spider monkeys (ateles) and seven beagle dogs that had chronic gastric fistulas. Two of the monkeys and three additional dogs had vagally-innervated gastric pouches. Marked differences in acid output occurred between animals.
