The interpretation of the different clinical pictures presented by the infestation of the human being by the blood fluke has been a subject of much confusion and controversy. So far, emphasis has been placed on the so-called intestinal and hepatic schistosomiasis. We believe that such classification is incomplete and that it has not been based upon pathophysiologically oriented principles.
On the basis of an analysis of our clinical experience with this illness for the last ten years and of the data obtained from autopsy and biopsy material, we present a new classification of the clinical pictures encountered in this disease.
