The nature of "turista," the acute diarrhea which affects visitors to Mexico and other countries, has been under investigation during the past five years.
The report includes epidemiologic data on 2,500 visitors from the United States to Mexico; a detailed delineation of the syndrome obtained from a careful study of 75 acutely ill patients; an evaluation of the role of parasites, bacteria, and viruses based on an extensive set of experiments done in Mexico and in New York; and a proposal for pharmacologic prophylaxis that will reduce, substantially, the incidence and severity of the disease.
