Patients afflicted with various types of neoplastic disease not infrequently succumb to respiratory insufficiency. The nature of the pulmonary pathology varies, and the underlying physiological derangements which lead to respiratory death are usually complex. One of the variables contributing to the development of respiratory insufficiency is radiotherapy to the chest. To evaluate the effect of radiation on pulmonary function, 15 patients free of cardiac and pulmonary disease, who were receiving radiotherapy for carcinoma of the breast or lung, were studied. Lung volumes, distribution of inspired air, arterial blood gases, diffusing capacity of the lung, and mechanics of breathing were measured
