Considering the needs of patients, dietary manuals can hardly be expected to show as much variation as cookbooks in contents, certainly not between fanciful extremes of Hospital Diets for the Newly-Wed Dietitian and Hospital Diets from the Seven Seas. Nevertheless these manuals can vary in content significantly.
The Vanderbilt manual, for example, has some very useful material not found in the present prototype of hospital diet manuals (that from the Mayo Clinic), and it appears to be slanted toward the needs of physicians with a strong interest in metabolic disease.
