A satisfactory theory of ventricular fibrillation must explain; (1) initiation of a premature systole and a series of re-entrant waves, and (2) the factors engendering their transformation into fibrillation.
Ten dogs were placed under hypothermia with the aid of cardiopulmonary bypass. Transmembrane potentials, utilizing 2 microelectrodes, and a surface electrogram were recorded simultaneously. Ventricular fibrillation was produced spontaneously by focal heating. Continuous recordings during the transition from a normal action potential to fibrillation potentials showed the following sequence of events: 1. Fibrillation is preceded by one or more ventricular premature systoles with a slow rate of depolarization and incomplete propagation.
