A kindred in which 7 males and 2 females exhibit hypokalemic periodic paralysis has been intensively studied by chemical analyses of skeletal muscle, serial measurements of body composition, and electromyography.
In 4 individuals, biopsies of skeletal muscle were performed in the nonparalytic and paralytic states (hypokalemia and paralysis were induced with glucose and insulin). Intra- and extracellular water content was normal in the nonparalytic state; however, intracellular sodium was increased while intracellular potassium was slightly decreased.
