Amino acid excretion patterns were examined in 16 patients with cystinuria. Renal clearances of amino acids were studied in 4 patients. One of these demonstrated renal tubular secretion of amino acids. All patients with cystinuria excrete the asymmetrical disulfide L-cysteine and L-homocysteine. The origin of this substance from methionine was demonstrated by the administration of methionine-S35. At 1.25 hours after administration of methionine-S35, the urinary cystine and asymmetrical disulfide had a higher specific activity than later specimens.
