The introduction of percutaneous needle biopsy has opened a new era in the study of kidney diseases. The value of this method in diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis is well established. This technique has also permitted, for the first time in man, the widespread application of electronmicroscopy to the study of the abnormal kidney.
Through electronmicroscopy, the fine structure of the nephron has been elucidated in all its complexity, providing a sounder morphologic basis for the understanding of renal function.
