Twenty years or more ago, medical students, facing minor morphological nuisances such as the Golgi apparatus, could dismiss from conscience responsibility for knowing anything about these cytological details—flyspecks close to the limit of resolution of light microscopes, and, what was worse, forms without function. But since then, electron microscopy has given to these curiosities discernible structure. What is more important, like the twentieth-century architects who have given form to function, the biochemists have assigned chemical functions to these once mysterious forms.
Cytological details must now be looked at in their finest resolutions by electron microscopy and seen by students. Mitochondria
