This symposium commemorates the centenary of the death of Theodor Maximilian Bilharz who discovered one of the agents of schistosomiasis (bilhargiasis) Schistosoma (Bilharzia) hematobium in Egypt about 1850. The members of this symposium represent the many disciplines that have an understanding of complex problems in parasitism demands. And schistosomiasis, as a disease of mankind, is indeed complex.
Discussions range from clinical and pathological features of the disease itself to the complexities of epidemiology, which involve such diverse factors as irrigation techniques, reservoir hosts, population habits and snail intermediate hosts. Generalizations are difficult, for schistosomiasis is distributed from the West Indies
