Work described in this monograph was undertaken to develop a prospective clinical study of surgical treatment for peptic ulcer. A review was made of 2,977 surgically treated patients in 12 Veterans Administration hospitals during 11 years beginning in 1947. There were 430 operations for gastric ulcer and 1,844 for duodenal ulcer. Patients were followed up for at least 2 years, some of them only by letter, but most by examination. A comprehensive standard form was used for tabulating information, which was then analyzed in a central office. The data were used for studies of the major indications for surgery, types
